Coconut oil is a girl’s best friend

 In Beauty, Wellness

I am fortunate to still have two grandmothers. They have both been a wonderful maternal influence to me and throughout my years I have gathered little gems of wisdom from them that you cannot find searching the pages of google. Coconut oil has been used by one of my grandmothers for years and years and finally the world has caught onto how wonderful it is. When my mother’s mother starting suffering from eczema on her scalp she started to lose her hair and for the first time in her many years, her hair started to look her age. Until she started using coconut oil, that was.

A few years ago I too started to experience a thinning of my hair and my once bouncy and shiny locks were limp and dull. I decided to give coconut oil a go as a hair mask and have never looked back. Since then I have discovered things about this sweet smelling oil that I absolutely need to share with you today. Get your pen and paper out, you don’t want to forget any of this…

Gets you buzzing

Coconut oil has 3 medium chain fatty acids in it: lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid. These MCT’s (medium chain triglycerides) are processed in the body differently to other saturated fats making this oil a readily available source of energy. They go straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are used as a quick source energy. Not only that but these MCT’s are also proven to have a positive effect on many brain disorders including Alzheimer’s.

Burns calories and kills hunger

The medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) in coconut oil can increase energy expenditure compared to the same amount of calories from longer chain fats. No longer are calories simply a number. Different sources of calories effect your hormones in various ways. Some, like coconut oil, increased 24 hour energy expenditure by 5%, totalling about 120 calories per day. A study in 14 healthy men discovered that those who ate the most MCTs at breakfast ate significantly fewer calories at lunch. This is apparently as a result of the way the fatty acids in it are metabolised, as ketone bodies, which can have an appetite reducing effect.

Moisturises your biggest organ and protects your locks

Skin, being your biggest organ, takes a massive beating from the environment. By using the oil topically on your hair and body you will increase the moisture and lipid levels which promotes healthy cell regeneration. It even blocks out 20% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays.  You can mix some of it into your moisturiser or use it as is on your skin. When applying it to your hair leave it in over night and you will notice fuller and shinier hair after you wash it over time. This is as result of it’s effectiveness in helping reduce protein loss.

Fights bacteria and heals

The lauric acid is converted by your body into monolaurin which is helpful in dealing with viruses and bacteria. According to the Coconut Research Center, coconut oil kills the viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, and other serious health risks. When applied to infected areas, coconut oil forms a chemical layer that protects the infected body part from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and viruses. Coconut oil is highly effective on bruises because it speeds up the healing process of damaged tissues, according to Organic Facts.

and everything else in between…

Coconut oil is great for people who suffer from Candida, it also provides relief from the inflammation it can cause. It helps dissolve kidney stones, reduces the work load on your liver, is wonderful for your bones, facilitates the absorption of calcium, and it is even believed that coconut oil plays an instrumental role in reducing a person’s viral susceptibility for HIV and cancer patients.

This is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Remember, be good to your body and it will be wonderful to you!
